This hardcover, 56-page, black and white volume features 48 page-sized letters drawn from a variety of different alphabets, to include Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Armenian, Hebrew and Arabic, among others. Each page contains one letter, with the exception of the first page, which contains three. As stated in the short preface, the book was inspired by the notion that that letters, as opposed to words, are the best linguistic models of the things of the observable physical universe, defined as they are by their environment and context. Unlike words, which have a fairly well defined intrinsic meaning, letters are only intelligible when combined with other letters and cannot be understood in isolation. In this respect, letters more than words resemble the individual objects of the observable world, all of which are only understood in a particular context, surrounded by other objects without which they cannot be understood.
